Defining the Role of Simulation in Clinical Education and the Healthcare Delivery System

Dear Delegate

The D-Day preparations are progressing well, and we look forward to a productive day.

We would reiterate that this day is dedicated to the open, honest and independent debate of the future of simulation, its role in clinical education and the healthcare delivery system. We have structured the day to enable representatives of the regulatory authorities across the multiprofessional spectrum to present their perspective of what the advantages and potential barriers are to developing the national strategy for simulation in the UK. Following this the delegates will engage in plenary debate to identify and outline the issues involved. After a break, the issues identified will form the basis for multiple round table discussions aimed at distilling out a set of applicable recommendations using defined tools.

These will be brought back to the plenary session for further discussion.

We do not have a platform for individual solutions to be presented, as we wish you to arrive at the optimum solution applicable on a national scale, rather than constrain you to a solution based upon the experiences from a local scale.

The Central Manchester & Manchester Children’s Hospital Foundation Trust have taken the initiative to organise this one-off conference in order to help inform and share the strategic work being undertaken at national and regional levels on this topic.

This meeting has been organised independently from the Department of Health and the many other organisations involved directly or indirectly with healthcare workforce education and specifically simulation-based education. However, it is timed purposely to precede the annual NAMS-CSN[i] conference in order to simplify travel and accommodation arrangements for the many interested individuals invited who wish to attend both events. This should also help promote a forum that allows all relevant contributors to gain a better understanding of the current and future needs for healthcare education and workforce development within the NHS whilst appreciating the strategic goals and quality assurance requirements that must be addressed in order for simulation to be used optimally for improving and sustaining high quality, safe patient care.

As a result of this calendar arrangement Laerdal, one of the NAMS-CSN conference sponsors has extended their financial support to help subsidise the costs for organising the Definition Day conference. This has enabled a reduced registration fee for the meeting.

We wish to state categorically that there has been no involvement whatsoever of the sponsor in the format, content, or the list of invited attendees to the meeting, in line with the Association of British healthcare industries code of business practice.  Their presence during the day is restricted exclusively to the communal areas where refreshments are being served. The sponsor will not be made aware of any discussions or outcomes from this day other than by the key points that are carried forward in summary and presented to the subsequent NAMS-CSN conference for consideration amongst this learned body, following which the content of the meetings will be accessible.

On behalf of Central Manchester & Manchester Children’s Hospital Foundation Trust We look forward to seeing you on the 24th November 2009 for what we hope will be an informative and constructive meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you on the day.
